Ebo Taylor & the Family Band

The legendary Ebo Taylor, who joins us next summer at We Out Here!

One of Ghana’s most prolific musicians, Ebo Taylor was an essential figure in the booming 50’s highlife scene, leading two of Ghana’s greatest big bands – Stargazers and Broadway Dance Band. Following that he moved to London to study music in 1962 alongside West African luminaries like Fela Kuti and Peter King, later forming the Black Star Highlife Band and incorporating jazz elements into traditional highlife forms.

Returning to Ghana, Taylor became an in-house arranger and producer for the Essiebons label, working with other major Ghanaian stars like C.K. Mann and Pat Thomas. Through the ’70s, he then recorded a number of solo projects, exploring unique fusions and borrowing elements from regional Ghanaian folk music, Afrobeat, jazz, soul and funk to create his own distinct style.

In 2008, Ebo Taylor met Afrobeat Academy band (based on Berlin) as well as the saxophonist Ben Abarbanel-Wolff, which led to the release of the album ‘Love and Death’ with Strut Record, his first internationally distributed album. His later releases Appia Kwa Bridge (2012), and Yen Art (2018, Mr Bongo) demonstrated Taylor’s continuing creativity, and maintaining his own sharp vision of highlife.

Join us to celebrate a vital six-decade deep musical career, as Ebo Taylor takes to the stage alongside his Family Band.
