Asha Puthli

Asha Puthli – iconic vocalist, and disco/jazz cult figure – joins us next summer as part of her first official tour in 40 years!

Perhaps best known for her stirring vocals on free jazz legend Ornette Coleman’s ‘Science Fiction’, Asha is a pioneer of jazz, funk, soul, and electronic dance music, whose five-decade career has enjoyed multiple resurgences whilst cementing a cult status.

Although Asha is a jazz improviser at heart, her major label recordings reflect her wide-ranging aesthetic: she moves between Indian classical, avant-garde jazz, disco, R&B, soul, funk, ambient, new wave and new age.

Her breakthrough disco album of 1976 ‘The Devil is Loose’ was named “An Instant Classic” by The New York Times, with the iconic track ‘Space Talk’ earning its place in record bags worldwide: from David Mancuso and the Loft crowd to afro cosmic pioneers Beppe Loda and Italo disco selectors.

Most recently Asha released her first remix album ‘Disco Mystic’ on @naya.beat, with remixes from the likes of Maurice Fulton, Jitwam, and Psychemagik. Using the long mythologised stems from the original recordings of Puthli’s most seminal albums, it sold out on vinyl within days of its release. This follows her critically acclaimed ‘Space Talk’ EP released in April 2023 featuring remixes of her iconic track by house music legend Dimitri From Paris. Music from her releases have been played by the likes of DJ Harvey, Peggy Gou, Mixmaster Morris and Greg Wilson to name a few.

Heading into 2024 Asha is gearing up for an eagerly-anticipated summer tour, which offers a once-in-a lifetime opportunity for her fans, old and new, to see her perform her long-lasting hits with an incredible live band. We are honoured to be hosting what’s set to be an unmissable performance at We Out Here 💜
